THE STORY SO FAR...
The Winward Company Limited was founded in 1944 (incorporated 1946) by Mr. Charles Winkless and his brother-in-law Mr. David Ward. Hence the name 'Winward'. Charles was trained as a toolmaker and later planning and estimating, working on Wartime tooling. David as a stainless steel spinner. The company commenced by producing aluminium cookware and drinking bottles for cycles and then progressed to development work for Ford Motor Co.-Lucas Automotive - Atomic Energy and produced aero-inlet cowls etc. David Ward died in 1955 but Charles Winkless continued the business as Chairman and was joined by his daughter Valerie (Ward) who then became Financial Director and his son Paul who became then the Managing Director. Winward became the largest factory producing brass and copper giftware etc. in the U.K. at one time employing over 250 people. With over 63 hand metal spinners at any one time. Mr. Charles Winkless and Valerie Ward retired in 2002 when Charles was 87 years of age. Unfortunately during December 2007 Mr. Charles Winkless passed away leaving his legacy to carry on through winward engineering ltd. Winward has always been and still is now a true family company. Mr. Paul Winkless continued to run the company until February 2011. During this time, unfortunately Paul (66yrs) passed away after many years of ill health. Many customers and suppliers over the years sent tributes which the Winkless family were very gratefull for. Paul's son, Mr. Chris Winkless is the current Managing Director and although it is now over 66 years old, the 3rd generation of the family are bringing it well into the 21st century. |
